About this deal

The girl reached out and touched a mitten to Colton’s chin. The wool came away red. She held it up between them for inspection. “You’re bleeding.” The pacing might not be smooth but the poetic writing of the ambiguity surrounding Delaney’s (dis)ability is what pulled me in. I don’t want to say too much without spoiling but I love how her ✨deafness✨ played a role in the supernatural. I, a deaf person, LOVE the 🦻🏽DEAF REP🧏‍♀️!! The book isn’t nowhere near perfect but the deaf author did phenomenal as an indie author!!!!

I took a lot of clippings trying to capture what it was about the writing that was pulling me out of the story, and reviewing the clippings made me realize it was the sheer repetition, combined with a heaping dose of metaphors and similes with the assist. Once or twice every so often to punctuate a point: great. For every description, big or small: no thank you, not for me. Delaney’s relationship with the LI, Colton, was also very strange. We learn that they met when they were younger, and now, in present day, they have this inexplicable attraction to each other. They’re constantly thinking about each other – they’re obsessed! The author claims this book is a slow-burn, but their instant connection and the fact that they’re immediately drawn to each other begs to differ. Sure, there’s a chance it’ll be revealed later in the book that they were prophesied to get close or whatever, and that’s why they felt this attraction; and perhaps it takes them a while to *actually* get together. However, you can’t really say it’s a slow-burn when in the first 20% she’s already ~ feeling something in her b Where was the content I was promised? Where was the travelling to different worlds, the darkness, the tortured heroine, the slow burn enemies to lovers, the dark academia romance? i really like the atmosphere of the school, the idea of walking between worlds, and the presence of the dead. it all lends itself perfectly to dark academia vibes. however, it gets lost in the repetitive metaphors, weak world-building, and inconsistent pacing. Her breath caught. Leaning in close, he pressed a kiss to the pulse beneath her ear. Her body arched instantly into his, like they were strung all together. Twin marionettes, their strings hopelessly twisted.THE WHISPERING DARK will burrow into your bones and nestle deep, refusing to let go. Kelly Andrew's prose is aching and lyrical, the mark of a master in the making. This is a story I won't soon forget' Hafsah Faizal, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of WE HUNT THE FLAME The prose. The metaphors were meticulously intertwined throughout the story, slowly unveiling the true nature of Delaney and Colton as they navigate the chaos that seemingly ensues upon them meeting in a university designed for people like them. The ambience of the book is more horror🧟‍♀️ than magical. more paranormal than fantasy. The book itself is written beautifully. Andrew has her descriptions nailed down pat; she is wonderful at crafting worlds and getting readers to see, smell, and taste what she does. There were so many lines where I read them and was like "oh yeah, this is going to be in an edit for this book". I love some poetic prose, and The Whispering Dark often had that. I know that the author is Deaf as well, and it was amazing to see that represented so well in this book. Being Deaf isn’t a handicap or something to pity: it’s a fact of life and with a couple of accommodations such as ASL, CIs, or well lit areas for conversation, Deaf persons live perfectly happy lives. The Raven Boys meets Ninth House with a deaf MC, a hijabi side character, and the most stunning writing you've read in your life. The Whispering Dark is incredibly immersive, I absolutely adored every aspect of it. It felt so intimate? I don't know how to explain it but I felt so much comfort every time I opened the book to continue reading.

The kiss was a surprise, immediate and immolating. There was nothing sweet about it. Nothing soft. Only the clash of mouths, the scrap of teeth. They collided the way they always did. Like they were going to war". Your presence is expected at the Godbole building, auditorium B, on the morning of September 1st. Like, y'all, it scared the shit out of me in some parts. I had my wig 𝗦𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗗 (⚆ᗝ⚆) AND I LOVED THAT ASPECT let me amend my review so it's more intelligible as i wrote the first one on no sleep (it's the same thing but with some clarification): Ok here's a list some of my fave quotes (doesn't even cover half of them but this is already getting so long): The little girl looked down at him, frowning. Her leggings were striped with red, orange, yellow, and green. Drowning had been cold and dark, but every part of her was bright, bright, bright. Her tiny mitten cuffed his wrist. The stitching was lumpy, done by hand. He couldn't help it. He went where she led, like a paper kite on a string. He was hopelessly caught, twisted in her branches. His line tangled. His spine splintered. His sail all in tatters. There was no clean way to work himself free".

In front of them, the doors rumbled open to reveal a familiar face. A lump solidified in Colton’s throat as Eric Hayes pushed over the threshold, ramming his substantial height into the already small space. The look he shot Colton’s way made him feel as if he’d been caught with his hands down his pants, and a hot well of resentment rose in his chest. that being said, the book is a fantasy and while i looked at it from an "x-men world view where some people have powers", there will be readers out there, muslim readers, who won't agree with how adya's powers were written. and that is 100% their right to have that opinion. i read it as a story based on strange science that allows for universe hopping. He’d tell her everything, in time. About the Apostle. About the Priory. About Liam. About the pledge they all made, the thin lip of Hell they’d found in the outskirts of Chicago. About nine-year-old Colton, who’d thrashed his way through the frozen Cocytus itself to lay himself at her feet. Drawn to her, drawn to her, the way every other dead, shivering thing drew in close.” The question tore through him. Lane was his. She'd alwas been his. And he was hers. They were painted the same shades. Threaded with the same lines. He'd spent his whole life drawn to her, and she to him.” He couldn’t help it. He went where she led, like a paper kite on a string. He was hopelessly caught, twisted in her branches. His line tangled. His spine splintered. His sail all in tatters. There was no clean way to work himself free.”

The pacing was super slow. There was nothing exciting, and I just wish it was different because this story had SO MUCH POTENTIAL! Nothing remotely interesting happened until the last 10% or so. The beginning was very strong and hooked me, so I was ready for a wild ride, but ultimately the whole plot is a mess. The author was trying to mix a lot of very different and interesting concepts, and it just didn’t work. Can the mc talk to the dead or the dark? They travel between worlds, but how? How did it come about? What is this institute that they go to study and how are you chosen except that you’ve had a near death experience? The dark not only limits vision, but for Delaney, speech as well. She’s Deaf, and though she has CIs (cochlear implants) reading lips is part of conversation for her too. It’s all smoke and mirrors, she’d seen someone comment, when a leaked video purported to show a Godbole student slipping between worlds. Anyone with a laptop can doctor footage. These students are paying into a sham.Next to Lane, some of the tension went out of Hayes’s shoulders. The sight of his relief rankled Colton beyond measure. He wasn’t a child. He didn’t need a keeper. It’s happened. The Meyers-Petrov girl has been accepted to the program. She’s to start in September. You’ll keep away from her, Price, do you understand?” After a fellow student turns up dead, she and Colton are forced to form a tenuous alliance, plummeting down a rabbit hole of deeply buried university secrets. They soon find themselves up against something old and nameless, an enemy that threatens to tear them - and their forbidden partnership - apart.
