About this deal

It may seem a relatively small gesture, given the opulence of every other garment, yet in declining to have something unnecessarily made he is very publicly declaring that the commitment he showed to sustainability as Prince of Wales will continue when he is king. The clothing will form part of a special Coronation display staged in the Ballroom to celebrate the historic service held at Westminster Abbey on 6 May. The King’s Robe of State is made of crimson velvet and was worn by King George VI at the Coronation in 1937.

Structured like a coat dress, the modern ivory Peau de Soie silk dress features silver and gold embroidered floral designs, which represent Their Majesties’ affection for nature and the British countryside. Its embroidered design on the cloth of gold features images of the four emblems of the United Kingdom; a dove of peace (representing the Holy Spirit); a Tudor Crown; and a pattern inspired by the Cosmati Pavement in Westminster Abbey, upon which the Anointing of His Majesty took place. For the investiture, King Charles will also wear the Robe Royal, an ornately embroidered robe decorated with national symbols over the anointing game.King Charles III will be crowned with St Edward’s crown, which was made for King Charles II in 1661.

During the investiture under the Imperial mantle, a Supertunica, a long, Byzantine-inspired gold silk coat is layered over. Used at every Coronation since King William IV’s in 1831, this year it conveyed King Charles III and Queen Camilla back to Buckingham Palace following their crowning. To leave Westminster Abbey, Charles put on this purple silk velvet robe that was, again, once worn by George VI.

While the King’s choice of outfits has provoked much discussion, there has also been further controversy and upset over the dress code for guests, with robes set to be banned, according to the Mirror.

Royals around the world pulled up in their best regal pomp to celebrate the crowning of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Her daughter, Zara Phillips, was less stoic but still elegant in a baby blue dress coat, matching Strathberry bag and diamond brooch last worn by Princess Anne in 2017. The purple tunic was also made by Ede and Ravenscroft and its design was inspired by similar tunics worn by George V and George VI at their coronations. The King is expected to enter the abbey in the robe of state, which is also known as the parliamentary robe.Visitors to the Summer Opening of the State Rooms will also be able to see the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, which conveyed Their Majesties to Westminster Abbey for the Coronation and which will be on display in the Palace’s State Entrance. The Robe uses a rich purple velvet, chosen to match His Majesty’s Robe of Estate, and has been embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework using the Goldwork technique, with the design also incorporating Her Majesty’s cypher.

Rowland hoped that suited attendees will honour one of the King’s favourite style flourishes: sporting a wildflower boutonniere in your lapel buttonhole. It is now only days until the Coronation of King Charles III, and the outfit he will be wearing has finally been announced.

National dress is a nod to the international heads of state and foreign delegations who will be in attendance — they can wear whatever is traditional to them. Hats are not only fun centrepieces for plain clothing, but they can also be worn with your favourite British costume. We needed extra speedy service and Lydia followed up on dates and stayed in regular communication with me. The Coronation outfits worn by Their Majesties The King and Queen will go on public display for the first time from tomorrow (Friday, 14 July) at Buckingham Palace.
