About this deal

Of the milks studied in the Poore and Nemecek research, oat milk does very well. Per litre, it uses 0.9 kg CO2e, 0.8 sqm land and 48 litres of water. All significantly less than both global and European dairy figures. Summary: Overall, the sustainabiilty of cashews will depend on the agricultural system and climate they are grown in, but there are more sustainable plant milks available. Is cashew milk good for you? Summary: While coconuts aren’t land and water intensive, they can only be grown in tropical environments which can lead to other environmental detriment. Is coconut milk good for you?

Innocent is not just about fruit smoothies, the brand offers a range of vegan milks including hazelnut. Poore and Nemecek did include European figures for soya milk, oat milk and rice milk too. With the exception of water use for rice milk (where the European figure was signifcantly higher than the global average), all other figures were the same or lower for European production so plant milks using ingredients grown closer to home may be better environmentally. Nutritional comparison of cow's milk and plant-based milk alternatives Like all plant milks, aside from coconut, it contains a lot less saturated fat than cow’s milk – over five times less. Yes and no! It’s definitely healthier. But there’s quite a lot of chocolate in it, so choose wisely when deciding which dark chocolate to use. Some brands have a lot more sugar than others and equally a lot less cocoa solids. Whilst you can make the mousse with whatever chocolate you like, aim for somewhere in the region of 65% to 80% cocoa solids to get a better ‘health’ balance. But be aware that the chocolate you choose, its ‘darkness’ and the level of bitterness will all affect the end flavour. It’s therefore crucial that you taste the mousse before spooning into glasses and if you feel its not sweet enough, add a little natural maple syrup to taste. We didn’t need it, but I know that at GFHQ we don’t like anything too sweet. We have made the decision to stop our dairy alternatives range from April 2023 to focus on our best selling fruit and veg juices and smoothies.

Oat milk is the most popular plant-based milk alternative in the UK and is known for being particularly good in coffee. If you have been diagnosed with a lactose intolerance, then eating or drinking dairy products can result in digestive issues such as diarrhoea, gas and bloating, which can make you feel pretty uncomfortable. For many people, it can be best to avoid dairy altogether.Other verified oat milks include: ASDA Oat Barista and Chilled, Ecomil Oat Drink, Provamel Oat Original and Oat Barista, and Alpro Oat Original, No Sugars and Growing Up.

Another one you might have dismissed! Newer to the scene, and as some of us here at The Vegan Society have found, it can be hard to convince people of the wonders of pea milk. We think it has the potential to be another versatile classic like soya milk. Look, all we are saying is give peas a chance! Dip your toes in (not literally) with Wunda Plant Based Not Milk in Original and Unsweetened, powered by protein from yellow split peas. They’re both gluten-free and low in salt and fat, with Wunda Original being low in sugar and Wunda Unsweetened being sugar-free. The product we looked at has a climate footprint of 0.31kg CO2e, much less than in the Poore and Nemecek research, but the way this is measured is slightly different to the Poore and Nemecek study so not directly comparable. And a recent study on water use by treenuts and groundnuts found that cashews used the highest volume of water (though pistachios and almonds used more blue water - irrigated water as opposed to rainfall). Some brands also offer semi-skimmed and whole versions, unsweetened and sweetened and 'barista' style drinks so you can create your favourite coffee at home. But the other big environmental advantage is that oats can be easily grown in temperate climates so are not associated with deforestation or loss of biodiversity.

It's good to see that many coffee shops now offer oat milk alongside soya, as it is by far the best vegan milk on the market in my opinion. Almond Rice milk scores very well for land use but is the highest, after dairy milk, for carbon emissions. This is because rice farmers often flood rice fields which breeds bacteria in the soil leading to methane production. It also means water use can be very high. Soya milk and oat milk are more versatile for use in tea and coffee because their taste isn’t as overpowering and they have a thinner consistency. You’ll likely get the best results if you opt for products like Oatly Barista or Alpro Soya for Professionals that are specifically formulated for hot drinks. Even still, a bit of trial and error might be involved before you find your perfect alternative milk for tea and coffee. Can you use dairy-free milk in cooking? Summary: While we can’t compare it with other non-dairy alternatives as it’s not included in the available data, hemp is a low impact crop with some interesting sustainability credentials. Is hemp seed milk good for you?
